I teach 2nd grade at a wonderful public school in North Carolina. We are a Title I school. I absolutely love my job and enjoy watching my students grow both socially and academically each year. The 2nd-grade year in school is a huge one for students to become proficient with reading.
Students in 2nd grade have had two years of learning to read and now they are ready for reading to learn.
I love teaching 2nd grade and love being part of their educational journey. They teach me as much as I teach them.
My Project
My students need flexible seats during reading and writing workshop since I like to have them read around the classroom instead of just at their desks. I also like to use birthday treats for their special day. They love getting a crown to wear for the day as well as a pencil and a special prize to take home.
My students will enjoy reading and writing while sitting in non-traditional seats.
They will have an opportunity to complete their work around the classroom with seats that are designed to seat them in a new and exciting way. At my school, my students use book boxes during Reading Workshop and they are given a chance to read around the classroom from these book boxes. These flexible seats, including cushioned mats will provide a new way for them to sit while reading. Also, my classroom recently went from carpet to tile so my students would love to have something to sit on since the floor can get cold. I plan to set my classroom up so that each student has a chance to use these new seats each week. I used some old beach chairs a few years ago that were almost torn apart and the students loved them. Something so simple seemed to grab their attention. This is why I want to give them many more opportunities to enjoy sitting while reading and working.
