Learning Math Through Technology

My students need Math software and headphones to incorporate educational technology into our daily Mathematics lessons.

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least 6 different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students love learning. They especially love learning Math. This subject is often seen as a great equalizer in my classroom of English language learners. Even if a student is not yet able to articulate a certain idea, they can show their idea through equations and models. I am requesting two computer programs, one of which is an interactive Math station focusing on Number Sense, Operations, Time and Money, Geometry and Measurement, Algebra and Patterns, Graphing and Probability, as well as Problem Solving. The other program, Bubble Pop, focuses on four specific categories of Math. I am also requesting headphones that will be needed for these programs.

Because of the different learners, I have in my classroom, I need to be creative in how my students engage with Math content.

I do this by varying the way that I teach. Sometimes I instruct in a whole group setting, at times I use small groups, and other times I allow the children to independently explore Math concepts through interactive centers or educational technology. These Math programs will allow my students to focus on activities that are directly aligned to their current learning needs while helping them develop their independent cognitive and problem solving skills. This will also allow me to meet with other groups of students to ensure that they can receive individualized support. I am excited for the possibilities that could happen in my classroom!
