My Students
I have 26 fun, energetic students in my classroom this school year. They are eager to learn and excited to be in school. I have a particularly difficult group of students this year with multiple mental health and emotional diagnoses, some of which are quite severe. I also have several students who are well-below benchmark for an average third grade class.
With 26 third-graders you can probably imagine the varied needs of each individual student from social and emotional needs, to their educational needs.
Teaching this group has been fun, exciting, exhausting and challenging. They challenge me every day as I challenge them to develop their skills, to think deeper, to read more, and to be responsible.
My Project
Covid-19 has greatly affected the mental and social health of the children in my classroom. I have students suffering from depression, anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder and more. I am requesting a variety of fun, entertaining picture books that will help my students understand and cope with their varied emotional needs.
There is no doubt in my mind that the pandemic and all of the related fear, stress, quarantining, separation, and time away from school has contributed greatly to their worsening mental health.
On top of their worsening mental health issues, our school district does not currently have a curriculum for teaching social and emotional skills.
Having a variety of picture books that emphasize certain skills will help me teach students how to cope, how to have a positive attitude, how to have integrity, and how to persevere.
