This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a group of multicultural students in an inner city school. Because we are from an urban area with a high poverty level student athletes often don't have the finances to afford the simplest of equipment. This along with small budgets, and constant monetary problems the lacrosse team is constantly in need of help. Lacrosse is a great game but can be extremely expensive. Because of this quite often our players are picking up sticks for the first time in their junior and senior years. It breaks my heart to have to ask a child who's family is sometimes wondering how they are going to pay the bills, or even eat, to go out and buy cleats, helmets, sticks, pads...

Once students do obtain the equipment to play with they have no means of repairing these items when they get damaged, or undergo normal wear and tear.

Most of the players my athletes compete against have been playing since they were under 9 years old. I can't think of many families in our area that could come up with the cost to play at that age or even now at the high school age.

My Project

Being in an urban area my athletes are mainly coming from single family households which unfortunately have not been able to provide their children with youth sports that can be expensive such as Lacrosse.

I don't have the resources nor do my athletes to purchase equipment such as the sticks, helmets or protective gear like gloves and elbow pads to keep them safe.

Often times players are trading off sticks as they come on & off field with other players. Sadly this happens with helmets as well for positions like our goalie. Not only is this embarrassing for high school athletes to do but it can be dangerous. Young athletes should not be turned off by a sport because of funding. All students should be allowed to experience what it is like to be part of a compitive game that teaches discipline, teamwork, and skills that require work. Budgets for athletics are slim due to the financial constraints placed on inner city schools. The equipments will go directly to athletes in need that simply can't afford it and my resources are not currently enough to provide.
