Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of my students are not able to purchase materials themselves, which is why their eyes light up when I’m able to hand them a composition book, a folder and other material for them to use and call their own. Students use their composition notebooks for daily language-based activities. They build self-confidence knowing that they can rely on continual reference to class-related language materials to advance their English learning.

The teacher chair and office mat will provide a special tutoring station where I'll be able to work with students one-on-one and in small groups.

Individual and small group learning benefits students directly by building students confidence. This classroom area, a teacher-student learning lab, supports reading skills and comprehension, which are foundational. Peer literacy-rich learning builds community in our classroom, reflecting that relationships are vitally important to academic success.

Most importantly, my English language learners are asked to display PRIDE –Prepare, Respect, Initiate, Do & Excel, for which they are rewarded. They are learning language in a variety of ways. For example, playing vocabulary BINGO and incorporating sentence writing competitions, directly support students’ language acquisition. Purchasing candy will be used to reward student language learning outcomes.

Also, my ELs benefit from a variety of language learning materials. The books and materials being purchased will be used to directly support my students' language development. A literacy-rich environment includes displaying language arts materials on the walls and attaching resources to our magnetic whiteboards.
