Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love using board books in my classroom because they are harder to break, easy to wipe down, and easy to store. I see how my students gravitate towards books with bright colors, large print, and interesting pictures. I have them flip through books during center time.
Sometimes when I read a story to the class I give certain students foam dough, a fidget spinner, or some other kind of sensory toy.
I know that it is easier for them to focus on the story if their hands are busy. I understand this because it is the way I learn. During our staff meetings and professional development trainings, I always volunteer to be the person who jots down the meeting minutes. I know that I can focus better when I am taking notes or doodling. The minute I sit back and try to listen to a lecture without keeping my hands busy my mind wanders off to the list of chores I have to get done, the items I need to add to my grocery list, those lesson plans I still need to type up....it never ends. I really want my students to be able to engage in learning. I think having these materials will really help.
