Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My primary students (K-2nd) with autism and low incidence disabilities have such a wide range of interests and skills that make every new day exciting. For students with delays in expressive language, they use pictures to communicate so they don't have to rely on speech.
Giving my students an alternative way to use their voices is empowering for them.
They enter my classroom confidently at the start of every morning, knowing they will use a picture to request a hug, high five, or wave hello. Their momentum keeps building from there.
Communication with pictures is embedded throughout the day as students work towards building independence in academic ability and life skills. Some students can write a sentence and identify numbers to 100. Other students are learning how to hold a pencil and sit in a chair.
Although we stay busy throughout our day transitioning to different skill-based activities, we also know how to have some fun! Play-Doh and dancing are a few class favorites. As our day nears the end, I watch as students say “bye” to each other, knowing this seemingly small gesture is a big win.
My Project
During daily reading and math centers, students have the privilege of using iPads. We are so grateful to have iPads available in the classroom as it allows learning to be differentiated to meet students where they're at. Students love to read books at their level with Reading A-Z, play fun interactive sorting games with BoomCards and practice math fluency with Freckle. I wish students could learn from these online resources to the maximum extent, however there is one small hiccup...
A lot of time is spent untangling pesky cords from the headsets rather than time spent learning from these effective online resources.
Currently, we use a modge podge of headsets in various forms of wear and tear (a lot of missing ear pads and stretched out headsets). We would love to use our precious time learning rather than untangling knots. Wireless headphones would allow this to happen!
Any consideration of a donation is much appreciated, and thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you have a wonderful day!
