Flexible seating is an alternative way to sit and attend to an activity, rather than a desk chair. I teach a diverse group of young learners with autism, and it is a challenge for them to stay alert and focused when they are feeling discomfort from a desk chair. For this reason, I am asking for wobble chairs, inflated wobble cushions, fidget chair bands, and picnic recliner seats. Flexible seating allows students to wobble, bounce, stand, and lean, which increases core strength, blood flow, and oxygen flow to the brain. Students will feel empowered when they choose a preferred chair to sit in. This will reinforce communication, which is a skill we are always building. Additionally, a variety of seating options encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. Thank you for reading about the impact flexible seating will have on my students!
