it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every year, freshmen entering our school is the start of another era that adds to the west side community on the island of Kauai. They enter as the students lowest on the totem pole and act accordingly . . . shy, worried, even scared. That's not how we let them exist. We get them to thrive.
Our school has a nationally recognized Freshman Academy that has a mission and vision statement based on the idea of nurturing all our incoming freshmen while preparing them for the following three years and beyond as they enter their community and the world.
We are a Title I school so funds are always a challenge for our students. Therefore, our focus is on relationships and revealing to the students they are capable of more than just their means.
My Project
Currently our school is participating in a "blended" learning environment. Due to the Covid epidemic all students have been forced to stay home and participate in digital online learning. Our school now offers blended learning where we see 25% of the students in class four days a week. This allows the entire student population to attend school on different days. This is also a blessing as the student attendance opens up opportunities for extracurricular activities and possibly even sports.
My project will offer students control and comfort in their classroom studies while in school using specific software.
All students are issued a basic Chromebook to complete assignments. While working in class, I would like to provide students peripherals such as a mouse or a full size keyboard to complete their work with comfort and ease.
The use of a mouse while designing projects using Sketchup (online design software) will provide precise control as they navigate the drafting portion of the software. This is far easier than trying to maneuver drafting tools on a touchpad. The phone extender will allow students to have their phones used as an extra monitor at eye level when referencing internet resources. The air mover is a bit of a luxury but much needed. Waimea is the westside of the island and temperatures are commonly in the upper 80's and 90's. Without air conditioning in my room, the air mover would provide a more conducive atmosphere for learning.
Studies have shown (and I agree) that students who are uncomfortable in their environment do not participate or learn well. By providing a little comfort, I aim to increase their learning and in classroom productivity.
