Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a group with diverse learning capabilities. I enjoy every day that I come to work because no two days are the same. I am a special education teacher at a fantastic elementary school. The campus that I serve on is a Title I campus, which means the majority of our students are economically disadvantaged and are not exposed to many things outside of opportunities afforded to them via school activities. My responsibility is to bridge any gap that any students encounter, whether it is cognitively or emotionally. When it comes to assignments some can be very mundane and monotonous so I try to add some spice things via throwing technology in, or having them to organize their thought process on a graphic organizer, or even throw in a board game. My students respond really well to the variety of ways that I teach them concepts, they are always very courteous and grateful which warms my heart!
My Project
My students will learn research-based, multisensory approach to teaching essential language skills. This approach is effective for all students, and especially those students with language-learning difficulties. Spelling riddles, silly songs about the rules and exceptions, and other activities that “play with sound” greatly appeal to and aid recall for these students. Because some learners naturally focus on sound patterns, they benefit more when words are grouped by sound patterns rather than the grapheme (written) patterns that are typically used in phonics. My students will greatly benefit from using these strategies and being able to apply them daily in their learning.
