I am an Intensive Academic Center (IAC) paraeducator. I work with students who have identified disabilities and demonstrate academic learning needs. My students are amazing. They are each unique with their own beautiful personalities and I get to watch them grow every day. They teach me so much!
I support my students in many different classrooms to include ELA, spanish, art, fitness, math, learning strategies, and personal development.
In our class, we have seen tears, rage, frustration, and sadness, but it is worth it when we see them smile and figure out what works so we can all learn together. Some days are harder than others, but every day is a brand new day to have a fresh start. We get to reset, forgive, and start over with as much grace as our students need.
My Project
I have seen students wear the same shirt and pants every single day. I have seen students wear the same shoes and the shoe on the left foot did not match the shoe on the right. These same students get bullied and ridiculed for smelling bad and never changing clothes. What can a student in middle school do if they don't have any money to buy new clothes or basic hygiene products? Students don't choose to be born poor. We can intervene. I want to create a "secret closet" for students to access basic necessities.
