Learning in the Sandbox!

Help me give my students a place to experience hand-eye coordination and small muscle control as they learn to manipulate sand accessories while also developing social skills such as sharing, compromising, and negotiating.

My Students

I teach in a universal pre-k program. It is made up of 3-5 year old children. It is a varied combination of special needs pre-k, typically developing 4-yerar-old's- and low socio-economic students. There are two classrooms at our school and 38 students between both classes. We are very involved with our students and their families and strive to work together to build a strong educational and social-emotional foundation for all.

As COVID-19 became a reality, it became necessary to step "out of the box" and prepare for a "COVID-19" safe environment while still allowing our students the space and freedom to learn in a developmentally appropriate manner.

The possibility of an "Outdoor Classroom" came to mind and after a lot of planning we were able to begin turning our playground into an outdoor classroom! We still have many needs that will allow us to include various materials and activities in that setting, though we have had a wonderful start through the support from administration and our local board office.

My Project

A sandbox does not always have to be filled with sand. Young children learn best using all their senses and one that is often overlooked is the proprioceptive, or how their bodies feel in space. Changing the materials in the space from beads, balls, corn, etc., will allow the children to learn through experience how their bodies feel different depending on what texture they are in contact with. Having a sandbox in the outdoor classroom will encourage children to work together, build language skills, solve problems and negotiate. This sandbox has a cover to assure it remains a safe and clean area for play and learning.
