Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come with a variety of disabilities; intellectually disabled, autism, multiple disabilities, hard of hearing, blindness and emotional disturbed along with self-injurious behaviors, one is hard of hearing learning sign language, we have multiple students with epilepsy. They have learning disabilities and are dependent on others for basic needs, such as, feeding, toileting, hand over hand learning and some are wheelchair bound and others are a flight risk. We are expanding classroom skills to generalize from one situation to another. These challenges exhibit a wide variety of characteristics, including problems, significant delays in reaching development milestones, and significant language and/or communication difficulties.
Each student is different in my classroom, what may work for one probably won't work for the other; But my students are always evolving and love trying to be more independent.
My Project
Animal Crossing is so much more than a video game. Surprisingly, this game holds many common daily life skills that can be taught to our students through a virtual representation in fun, playful and gaming way. Specifically, teaching our students about finances, bills like a home loan, self sufficiency of nutrition through a community garden, some practical science application of digging up fossils to donate to the "in-game museum", going fishing, working and selling items to receive money, including but not limited to many other life skills.
Our students would also love Mario Kart during recreation/leisure time because it creates interaction with others, team bonding and provides communication with other students.
