Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are awesome! They are in 5th grade and have such an excitement and love for learning. Most come from a low social-economic status, since 85% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The majority of my class are English Language Learners, coming from families that have immigrated into the United States.
They are gloriously respectful, kind, and eager to learn.
This year my students have learned much about Mexican American History in the United States, as well as Civil Rights through units provided by my district, but also supplemented by materials provided by myself. I am interested in continuing to teach them about Civil And Human Rights, both subjects that compliment each other and teach them that we all are part of the Human Race. By purchasing a classroom set of Farewell to Manzanar, students will be able to read independently and follow along with me to learn more about the lives of Japanese Immigrants before and after World War II. I know that this resource will be invaluable to their success as readers, but not only that, by using this book as a resource students will hopefully become more aware, kinder, global citizens.
My Project
This year we are learning about human and civil rights in the United States. By use of literature, students have learned more about the history of the United States, and what it means to be a global citizen.
By each student having a copy of Farewell to Manzanar, fifth graders will be able to learn about a history of Japanese Americans that is rarely spoken of.
Students will be able to improve their reading and writing skills through structured in class lessons. More importantly, they will also become more aware of the history that came before them, the history of immigrants in our country.
