This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over the last 4 years of teaching, I have learned countless stories of inspiration, perseverance, and accomplishment from my students here in Northeast Las Vegas. When I first entered the classroom as a physics teacher, I remember the common sentiment that there were not enough high-quality opportunities for students from our neighborhood in terms of internships and after-school programs, and to that reality, many students had shunned career pathways in STEM. Now, I am happy to say that things are different.

My Project

Science is a powerful and meaningful pursuit in learning. I believe that the way we educate and inspire our youth to utilize science and its methods will produce the advancement of human society and culture in a way that is sustainable, meaningful, and impactful for the future of all life. I think that there is still a lot to improve upon in my content knowledge and pedagogy, and I believe this will be a pursuit of tremendous importance in my life, and I know my students will expect it of me as we continue to build our programs at our school and beyond.

Through attending the NSTA National Conference in April, I plan on developing more compelling lessons that tie in the different elements of direct instruction and project-based learning in the physical sciences and Career and Technical Education (CTE) disciplines.

Due to the fact that I now teach in Career and Technical Education (CTE), I often find opportunities to tie in my previous practice of teaching physics in with the career-oriented learning objectives that I now implement in my pedagogy. I also have learned of the tremendous benefit that quality PD can offer to further the careers of educators, and I believe that this is the right time to move forward.
