Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are part of a pilot program for full day PreK3 that is a collaboration between Head Start and Austin ISD. This program gives children from all cultures, areas, and incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district. My energetic preschoolers enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore.

My students deserve access and exposure to a vast array of scientific exploration that utilizes quality materials and equipment to produce both meaningful and positive learning experiences.

I teach at a 99.1% Title I campus where all of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Our campus serves children living in the Booker T. Washington housing projects and surrounding apartment complexes. Our school would be so ever grateful for any donations so that we can purchase quality materials and tools that will aid PreK3 students with channelling their inquisitive minds and support teachers with developing creative teaching media for their students. Thank you in advance for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you

My Project

Our PreK 3 students have a growing fascination and interest in nature and the living creatures they encounter. Together as a learning community, we have worked really hard to build a flexible living sciences space in our classroom. Currently we have been successfully raising garden snails and pill bugs and now feel ready to demonstrate care, responsibility and empathy for another living creature, specifically frogs and fish.

As the warmer seasons approach, we hope to engage our students in various life cycles that take place in the world around them.

Along with the plants they will grow from seed, we know the children will also delight in the experience witnessing the metamorphosis of tadpole to frog and observe how fish live in water. We need particular resources and tools to raise, house and care for leopard frog tadpoles and a betta fish. This includes materials to design naturalistic habitats and raising food (meal worms) for our class pets. It is with these exposures to life cycles and ecosystems that we believe that the children will witness and learn the differences between living organisms and the way they live. Through these biology based experiences, we seek to encourage a respect and appreciation for nature while also instilling in our a students a sense understanding and recognition towards the loved ones who care for them.
