We offer a wide variety of technology classes including Computer Science, Computer Applications, Robotics and Applied Tech. My students are as varied as the subject that I teach.
My students hunger for the opportunity to learn and practice technology skills like coding, electrical engineering and rapid prototyping.
They need to use their hands and thrive when they are out of their seats, actively participating in their learning. My room is often loud- with machines running and students talking. We have lots of parts- computers, resistors, motors, notebooks- and all of it out in semi-organized chaos.
I love what I do because I know that these kids deserve every opportunity. Computer Science- coding- is the future. I want to engage all my kiddos so they can see how it applies to them and their lives.
My Project
I am tasked with educating our youth to prepare them for careers that do not yet exist. I am teaching them how to code, how to build physical devices that engage and inspire. But wait- how do I gain both the content knowledge and the learning theory necessary to provide these opportunities for our students?
I need to be the learner and immerse myself in the future.
The International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) is the leader in Educational Technology. The best and the brightest educators provide extensive and in-depth sessions designed for teachers like myself. I must keep my course content relevant and on point, to keep up with the changing technology and the changing teaching practices.
This conference is during a time when I am not teaching so my being away will not impact my students negatively, I will not have to find a substitute who can teach robotics, computer science or run a laser cutter. I will not be worried about grading papers while I am gone- I can totally focus on learning and lesson planning for my classes with what I learn.
