My Students

1 out of 3 Americans are financially literate. After attending the 2015 National Center for Families Learning Summit, I learned how important literacy is for a person's success in life- all types of literacy, including financial literacy. My goal is to help my students become financially literate.

My students are warm, friendly, and curious kids who are excited to come to class and learn every day.

They love asking questions and having discussions in class. At 12 and 13 years old, they are figuring out who they are and what their passions are. My school is a positive environment for them to be in each day. 53% of the school population receives free or reduced price lunch, and 64% are minorities. This creates a diverse culture for students, and they are able to learn a lot from each other. The students have school spirit, and this shows in their daily actions.

My Project

The Chromebooks will enable my students to access wonderful resources that will help them become financially literate. The National Center for Families Learning has two great resources that my students would be able to use for free. One is the Internet site Wonderopolis. The site can be used on a daily basis to access the wonder of the day and assist my students with their reading. Some of the Wonders of the Day focus on financial literacy such as Wonder #888 Are you in the Red or the Black?, #580 Do You Try to Keep Up With the Joneses, and #22 How Can Spare Change Make a Big Difference? My students could learn to be better consumers with Wonder #913 What Makes a Product Generic? The NCFL also created an app, Renegade Buggies, that is a fun game with financial literacy curriculum at its core. By using the app, students will learn to be financially responsible by using smart consumer strategies. The books will also be a great resource from them to learn from.

By helping students become financially literate, not only will my students learn about financial issues and budgeting, but other academic areas will improve.

The results of a study conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that students who had high financial literacy had strong math and reading skills. By using the Chromebooks my students will be prepared for financial situations in life, and will also be working on their math and reading skills.
