My students need a variety of different economic-themed board games that teach them about finances, money management, resource management, and entrepreneurship, all while allowing them to safely take financial risks.
My students work in a team-taught atmosphere and spend a ton of time together. We study Shakespeare (with costumes and props, the way it was meant to be read!), read a LOT of books, and are working to become excellent writers.
The students in my classroom see themselves on a learning continuum that always has endless space for improvement.
We work on projects and discussions together often, and we love to collaborate and share our talents. Some highlights of our year include reading Macbeth, writing research papers, and preparing self-exploration projects to culminate our year.
My Project
Our freshmen are exposed to financial literacy in a few different ways: through Personal Finance class and through the Economics unit in Freshman Academy. In Academy, we try to teach about things like the stock market while also showing students how those larger things affect their personal finance choices.
Using board games in order to help students apply their knowledge of these larger concepts will help the information soak in and help create more financially literate students.
During these games, players have to trade, manage production, maximize profits, and make financial decisions that involve risk - all real world skills that we would love for them to learn and practice in order to be successful and financially literate adults. In "Happy Pigs," students have to make decisions on their gameplay pig farm in order to maximize profits, while in Grandpa Beck's "Cover Your Assets," students learn that having diverse assets is the key to progressing toward the win. I appreciate the faster pace of the Monopoly Empire game, but also think that students will make more informed choices in Classic Monopoly than they might have when playing at home. I'm particularly excited for them to try out "Cashflow 101" and see how they fare not only against each other, but also against the stock market, the housing market, and Mother Nature.
