This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have just arrived in the United States from a variety of non English speaking countries. Many have left loved ones behind or faced dangers along the way. Their new school is a Title I school in Houston, Texas where 92% of their fellow classmates are economically disadvantaged.

Despite the proverbial deck being stacked against them, my students are excited to learn English and are looking forward to their future.

I am grateful for the chance to teach these unique children, and watch them grow into successful young ladies and gentlemen.

My Project

With my students being both new to the United States and English, I need a way to grab their attention and keep them focused. Studies show that color stimulates the brain, which is why I use lots of it to help new vocabulary "stick".

Our interactive notebooks use colored paper, a variety of vibrant envelopes, uniquely designed pockets, and colored pencils.

Learning a new language is difficult and frustrating , so taking a few extra moments to relax while cutting and coloring, helps my students feel more comfortable in their new environment, and therefore they are more successful in learning a new language.
