This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I public school in Texas that welcomes many newcomers daily. The students come from different countries around the world and speak many languages, but most speak Spanish. These students are of different ages, smart, and work very hard. They are at a disadvantage to other students because they need to learn English quickly. We need Curso de ingles para principiantes to support students in learning English. This material will be used in centers where the students can work at their own pace and an English level. The other materials are visuals to help the students connect English words with vocabulary they already know. There is a rigorous curriculum to teach, and these emergent bilinguals have to learn English outside of the curriculum. These materials will help them learn the language quicker on their own.
We need to learn English quickly!
Our Dual Language program is effective for students who start at a kinder level, but the students who come to us in the middle of the school year from different grades do not have the time needed and are rushed to learn English. As a bilingual teacher servicing these students, I need resources to accelerate English learning in the classroom, but I do not have the tools. These students come with high knowledge levels and need to make connections between the languages because the concepts learned in any language are transferred to another language as soon as they learn the vocabulary in the second language.
