Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are resilient and determined to find success even when COVID-19 seems to want to slow them down or get in their way. I teach DLI -English for an amazing group of 5th grade students. Not only are they trying to learn a second language (third for some of them) while living through a pandemic, but a lot of them are trying to do this while everyday life stressors caused by the pandemic are holding them back. Since 3rd grade, my students have been faced with the realities of what education looks like during COVID. They came into my classroom with serious deficits in basic mathematical (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and number sense) which holds them back from learning the 5th grade cores successfully. They also came in struggling with reading comprehension and fluency. While they are gaining ground, some new interesting books and hands-on manipulatives would go a long way to fill in the holes for my students.
My Project
Academic learning is my main concern right now. I want my students to be able to feel confident in their learning and be able to rely on their background mathematical and language arts skills to help them excel in 6th grade and beyond. The manipulatives will help me teach small group interventions for students who are struggling with math skills, but also explain higher-level thinking skills to the whole class as we tackle the 5th grade core together. The non-fiction Time Magazine readers will help my students focus on non-fictional stories while working on fluency and comprehension AND also add in current events so my students can see what's happening in the world around them.
