My students are scholars, learners, writers, readers, and mathematicians. They speak English, Arabic, Spanish, Lao, Tibetan, Vietnamese and Tagalog and each brings their unique backgrounds to our classroom.
My students are shooting for the stars this year as they explore their inherent capabilities as learners, friends, and members of a classroom community that values kindness, diversity, and respect.
Our school is a Title I school, which means that more than half of the families it serves come from low-income households. Twenty-five percent of students are English Language Learners, ninety-three percent are from low-income households, and one-hundred percent receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
My students are four-years-old and are still learning how to keep their hands to themselves. Currently, our outside time is relatively unstructured and, although they are having fun, there are far too many opportunities for students to get hurt. My students need structure.
The materials I am requesting would be part of several outdoor centers I am planning on setting up outside.
The sidewalk chalk would be used for students to practice their letters and numbers. The water table would be used for students to explore cause and effect and to practice making predictions. I would use the yoga mats and to set up a yoga center for students to practice different yoga positions. All of these centers would contribute to a structured, educational outdoor learning time with minimal opportunities for students to get hurt.
