My Students

Our school is a Title I school trying to provide the ever-changing resources needed to coordinate with the current educational standards which also change often.

During the upcoming school year, I will be fortunate to be teaching a great group of sixth graders.

This group of students comes from a small, rural school that houses approximately 300 kindergarten through sixth-grade students. Most of these students come from low-income and low socioeconomic households.

These particular students are high-energy and have the ability to design and create wonderful things with their academic successes. One obstacle they face is not having the resources needed to support their creativity. Teachers foster independence and thinking "outside the box" to find ways to meet the students' needs the best they can, but the financial needs are greater than most teachers can provide.

My Project

Our school has moved to a 4-day week this school year. The response to our new learning week has been amazing. Student and teacher morale are up. Teachers are still on track with their curriculum pacing. The extra "weekend day" gives families more time together for vacations, medical appointments, haircuts, etc. This has helped bring our excessive absenteeism to go down as well.

The only downfall to our new calendar is longer school days, which means longer periods of instruction and sitting for an extended time.

Many students need to be able to move and exert built up energy. The goal of this project is to provide my students an active learning environment with floor seating area that will allow them a place to move, stretch, meditate, move about without disrupting other students. The floor table will be placed on a carpet area and will seat four students at a time. I envision this area for my students who usually find their way to the floor during group work. This is just one part of a bigger picture I have planned for my classroom. I am hoping to provide several areas for an active learning environment. Please help my students to gain this valuable learning space to assist in our these longer days so students feel they have space to learn, turn, move, and groove!
