This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my class use their time at school to work hard and learn, as well as play and build social skills. We teach Social Emotional Learning every day, in addition to the core subjects.
My students are discovering the sacrifices and rewards of working in a team.
My students work at many different academic levels and a third of my students are diverse learners, so working together can be a challenge. They have to display patience, endurance and empathy daily. This leads to many obstacles, the occasional meltdown, but ultimately wins. Learning to work, play and move safely together is a critical skill that they will need all their lives.
My Project
With a new rug, students will be able to have a comfy space to learn away from their desks. Currently students either sit on the bare floor or at their desks during lessons, videos and read alouds. With your help, I can provide a cozy area for them to learn how to share a communal space while maintaining personal boundaries. I believe rug time creates a perfect opportunity to explicitly teach these social skills.
The playground equipment would be a key part in carrying out my school's vision of inclusion.
With a third of students being diverse learners, recess is a crucial time for teaching students how to include everyone at their own pace and in their own special way. This equipment would help me teach whole-group games with the eventual goal of students being able to understand and lead their own games while still playing inclusively. My students would be so excited to see our old and broken equipment replaced with these nice new balls, cones, and soccer goals. Please help me make our dream come true!
