Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We all need freedom of movement, even when we're supposed to stay in our seats, and this is even more imperative for a group of young, energetic kindergarteners.
My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.
Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, these children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time.
My Project
It is challenging for many of my students to concentrate and focus on their classwork. Often, they are distracted by other students, outside noises, and general classroom buzz. Even more so, it is harder for certain students to simply listen to and focus on the teacher during a lesson or read-aloud. These Hokki stools are built for active sitting, a perfect tool for young 5- and 6-year olds who are doing their best to concentrate and focus, but could use a little extra support.
If my overly-active and fidgety students could spend some part of the day using these stools, instead of regular chairs, and be able to finish assignments or concentrate on a lesson better, they could increase their learning potential that much more.
