Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher at a low-income school in Washington, I walk into a classroom of diversity every day. We are a Title I school. My students come from all different backgrounds, speak different languages, and teach me about different cultures each and every day.
I learn something from them with everything we do.
This year, I get the chance to learn from twice as many students each day, as I will be teaching a dual language class where my students learn half their day in Spanish and half of their day in English. That means I will have fifty-plus students each day, a majority of which are English Language Learners.
As I teach them, they teach me and we grow together. I want to touch these students' lives as often as I can just like they touch mine.
My Project
Right now in the fourth grade, we are doing a genre book study of Historical Fiction Books. We are reading and writing Historical Fiction and learning about History in Social Studies. We are integrating it all! Historical Fiction is tricky though and each reader has their own skills to work on. In a class of most language learners, this is challenging with so many different reading skills that different students have.
For Language, Learners' reading is so much more beneficial when we integrate it with our history social studies content.
That is why I want to purchase some historical fiction books at different levels to help all my students learn the skills they need to read while enjoying historical fiction books!
