My Students

I teach at a low-income school. We start at Head Start and continue through second grade. Our classroom consists of 22 five and six-year old students. My students are very energetic and always ready to learn. Most come from low-income homes and depend on the school to provide most meals. Many of our students are being raised by grandparents or other family members, usually on a fixed monthly income. All of our students receive a free breakfast and lunch at school.

My Project

Our school district planned for students to return to face-to-face instruction. Our start date was postponed. We were scheduled to return to school two days before Hurricane Laura hit, so school was postponed again. This area was hit extremely hard by the hurricane. Approximately 97% of our schools were damaged by the hurricane, and we cannot return to our buildings.

The combination of Covid-19 and Hurricane Laura is forcing us to go virtual to teach our students.

This requires students to have materials at home for their use. We use playdough to gain hand strength and form letters we are learning. The counting blocks are used to teach counting, as well as addition and subtraction. Students using iPads or other tablets need a stylus to reinforce proper pencil grip. Playing cards are a fun way to practice counting, number recognition, and other math games. The zipper pouches will hold the materials to keep them from being misplaced.
