"Art is fundamental, unique to each of us...Even in difficult economic times - especially in difficult economic times - the arts are essential." –Maria Shriver, Award-Winning Journalist and Author
For 13 years, I've taken students to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and many have gone on to study and work in the arts: in cinema; digital, visual, and fabric arts; and, of course, theater.
I like to think their years traveling back and forth to the OSF have helped shape their interests.
According to the Oregon Department of Education's annual report, last year 51% of our students were "economically disadvantaged." Economically challenged students often face discrimination, but that shouldn't exclude them from the arts. This trip is expensive, with a total cost of just over $175 per student. With your help, we'll cut that cost in half, and ensure that each student has the ability to engage in the arts.
My Project
Our school does not have the funds to help needy students with extra-curricular activities. That's why I'm asking for your help. This year I'm taking 20 students to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and quite a few of those students will struggle to come up with the admittance price.
With your help, these students will get to watch the plays Peter and the Starcatcher, The Tempest, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and take part in the educational prologues that precede the plays and the raucous analyses that come after.
And, if that isn't enough, they will also engage in a two-hour actor-lead workshop. I'd like your help in covering 50% of the costs for them to attend. We'll be doing other fundraising to cover the rest of the trip expenses, and come May, we'll be set to watch world-class theatrical presentations at the OSF, revolutionizing perceptions of their world and its possibilities.
