My Students
I teach in an area that receives a large number of immigrant and refugee children. Within our district, over 77 languages and 104 countries are represented. We have several centers housed within neighborhood schools to provide sheltered language and academic instruction to English Language Learners needing intensive support upon arrival in the United States.
I currently have 2nd and 3rd-grade students from a variety of countries and linguistic backgrounds.
Some of these students had access to education in their home countries and are working to translate their academic knowledge into a new language. Others have had interrupted or no previous education and have a great deal of work ahead of them as they make the transition into our educational system. Regardless of their background, each one of them will need high-quality materials and instruction to build the vocabulary and comprehension needed to excel.
Due to the ongoing effects of Hurricane Maria, our program has seen an influx of students from Puerto Rico. Currently, one-third of our enrolled students were displaced from their homes. The materials requested in this project will support them in developing their English language as well as support their continued academic progress.
My Project
My students spend all day working hard on acquiring English and content area skills and knowledge. While learning a language comes easier to children than adults, it can still be a challenging process. I am constantly looking for new materials that support language and content knowledge to keep the process engaging and fun.
These Fairy Tale problem solving activities will support my student in developing critical STEM skills while integrating literacy to support our language goals with some of our favorite fairy tale characters!
I will be able to use these materials to create engaging units of direct instruction and independent exploration. This kit provides materials to explore the concepts of structure and stability while introducing students to the design process. They will promote critical thinking skills while students work to solve problems related to fairy tale characters like Rapunzel (tower rescue), Little Red Riding Hood (building a better basket), and The Gingerbread Man (crossing the river).
I am hoping to have this project funded in time to begin integrating these materials with our summer school program for English Language Learners this year. These materials would be a great enrichment resource for our students.
