My Students

My school is an ethnically and economically diverse community in Brooklyn N.Y. Many of the students receive free lunch and are English as second language learners. My school is a wonderful environment. When I walk through the hallways I continue to be impressed with the lovely work on the bulletin boards. As I peek in the classrooms I am witnessing learning: groups of children on the rug engaged in a class meeting, being read a story, or, working together in small groups. The teachers are incredible and work tirelessly for our students. The arts are a large part of the school with music, dance and visual art during the school day in addition to afterschool programs. We are also very fortunate to have an active and generous parent association. Also many parents are Learning Leaders and are committed to working in the classroom with our teachers. The neighborhood is a bustling area of old historic buildings, subsidized housing, new residential construction, young families, professionals, blue collar mechanics, artists, and a mix of small fashionable shops and chain stores and trendy restaurants.

My Project

We are requesting pencils, erasers, paper and mirrors which my students will use to create a self-portrait. Using the requested mirrors they will closely study their facial features and learn about symmetry and the proportions of the face. They will observe the shapes of their eyes, and learn to understand that the distance in between their eyes is determined by the width of their nose. They will observe that their lips are as wide as the middle of their eyes. They will learn about using varying tones to create lights and darks, with soft and heavy pressure. My students will need the erasers to refine their work and a good quality paper that will be strong enough for repeated editing.

My students will use words to describe themselves and arrange these words as details and decoration for their rendered faces.

We will brainstorm, writing lists of active and vibrant words.
