I teach art in a Pre K through 5th grade elementary school in New York City. My school has about 850 students, the population is very ethnically and economically diverse: African American, Asian, Arabic, Latino and White. The school is in a sophisticated upscale neighborhood. Some of the students live in the neighborhood, a large number of students live nearby in public housing, and some more live in another neighborhood outside of the school zone. The students are undivided by these differences and are accepting of their classmates, and that is one of the reasons I love teaching there. There is a great sense of respect and tolerance for others. Most of my students have art once a week for 50 minutes, some classes I see twice a week. Art is exhibited through the school and in the classrooms. In my classroom students are encouraged to express themselves while they are learning about new techniques and materials.
