Learning about energy with ice cream!

Help me give my students some nice, cold ice for our energy lab!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I use ice in a lot of different labs and demonstrations that I do in my science class. For example, we use ice when learning about the properties of water and what makes water such an important property of life on Earth. Ice is important in our biotechnology unit to keep competent cells cool until we heat shock them during the transformation stage. I use ice to make ice-cold water for students to demonstrate convection currents in the ocean and the movement of hot and cold water. Students then model this phenomenon and discuss cause and effect with weather and climate.

Surprisingly, ice is expensive and hard to store in large amounts!

I always inevitably buy bags of ice from the market, lugging my huge cooler and hoping that the ice stays cool enough to last the entire day. A particular lab that is costly is my ice cream lab. It is a favorite of the students but this past year, I had to purchase 6 large bags of ice so that I had enough for all my students. That is on top of what I made on my own and stored in the freezer at school. It is a numbers game as I don't want to have extra due to limited space in the freezer and I can't exactly return "used ice". Having this ice machine will make a huge difference and will be used throughout the year.
