Learning About Community Workers in Pre-K

My students need community block play people, a community workers book set, and community workers poster pack.

I teach 19 curious pre-k students in a Title I school located in a rural community with a high poverty rate. Ninety one percent of our school qualify for free/reduced lunches.

Our Title I program has no money allocated for adding or replacing classroom materials for my class. Though I have a few books about community workers, I would like to add additional books, posters, and block people to provide students with quality materials to develop knowledge of and respect for community helpers.

By reading books from the community worker book set, students will develop a deeper understanding of and respect for the role each worker plays in helping/protecting us. By displaying posters of community workers, students will begin to recognize the way community workers dress and recognize what they do. Students can use this knowledge in their play. The community worker block people will allow students to role play being police officers, firefighters, mail carriers, doctors and more. This type of play helps to develop respect for workers in our community. Exposure to books, poster, and block people helps to deepen their understanding of the world around them.

By funding this project, you will ensure that my young, curious pre-k students in my room will have access to materials that will foster the respect for and understanding of the role community helpers play in our community.
