My Project

Do you remember experiencing a specific science lesson? If you don't, it may be due to the lack of opportunity to experience it with multiple senses. The more we see, hear, feel, smell, and taste, the more we remember. My class is living proof. Some of my first lessons this year covered the scientific method. We watched some videos, read some text, did some worksheets, and I was disappointed time and again by how little they seemed to be retaining. When assessed, 32% of the 52 students were able to answer questions about the processes of the scientific method with at least 75% accuracy. This was not working.

Then, Efferdent went on sale, and I had a coupon.

I grabbed a box, thinking we could use it in the classroom to practice using the scientific method. The box claimed a brilliant smile would result from the effervescent action of one tablet. Boy, they weren't kidding! We divided into groups, made some predictions about how long it would take for a tablet to dissolve in water. Something amazing happened. They started asking questions. "What if the water was hot?" After completing the experiment, 88% of students were able to answer questions about the processes of the scientific method with 90% or better accuracy. This IS working.

The microscope, globe, electric burners, clipboards, and other science supplies I am requesting are things I can use and reuse. Please help me give these kiddos the chance to experience and experiment. Measuring weather, understanding the universe, seeing examples of types of rocks and minerals are just a few of the activities I have planned.
