Learners Gotta Learn!

My students need snacks to keep their stomachs full, band-aids because sometimes accidents happen, and hard candies for when we have nervous testing tummies!

My Students

The students at our school have worked hard to excel and aim for excellence. We have brought our school grade up in the past few years while overcoming great odds. Each year the community supports where they can but, unfortunately, finances are tight in our area.

Compared to the rest of the county, our school has twice the average percentage of students with special needs, twice the average percentage of students who are homeless, and has the highest poverty rate in the county as 88% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

The little things. When we go on trips, we often forget those. When preparing for classrooms, those are the things we run out of and find students are asking for most frequently.

My students need simple snacks, quality band-aids, and hard candies for testing to feel comfortable and cared for in our classroom, so that they feel safe to learn.

Because many of our students are getting on the bus before 6:30am, and are not eating lunch until after 11:30am, they get hungry in between. Having snacks available for those students who are eligible for the free/reduced lunch plan, or those who sometimes forget allows me to keep their bodies fueled while they learn so that they are not distracted by a growling stomach.

A wet paper towel followed by a dry off then a good band-aid really is a cure for most classroom ailments. (Please know that I do utilize the school nurse, but sometimes students become frequent flyers to her office!) Having quality band-aids that stick prevents us from going through near as many band-aids in general!

Some days students come to me with nervous stomachs. A dog may have run away, or a parent is traveling, or they are worried about their big test. When this happens, often a piece of hard candy and a good pep talk will ease those nerves and help them feel more confident to conquer the day.Having individually prepacked foods also allows our school to utilize a “Friday Friends” program where our students who are designated as homeless can take home easy to eat, or minimal preparation needed, food in their backpacks for themselves and younger siblings. Small items such as toiletries and bandages can sometimes be added to these care packages as well, if we know there is a need, on a case by case basis, because unfortunately, these items are harder to come by for the schools too.
