Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominately 10th grade English Language Learners (ELLs) with a passion for learning and life. Many have overcome extreme adversity this year, especially with the Harvey flooding, They are low-socioeconomic and our school is a Title 1 campus.
Additionally, I'm inspired by my Limited English Proficient (LEP) students' abilities to continually outperform others without language barriers.
They are dedicated learners with endless potential with which they will contribute to the world. I can help take them to the next level with your help.
My Project
My students need high-interest , low-level books that will engage them and help them read for longer periods of time. The more time on task they spend reading, the more their skills develop. As their skills develop, they read more books and the cycle continues. My English Language Learners are reluctant readers and need appropriate books for their age level readily available in our class library.
These books will help the students develop positive ability beliefs about their reading, and therefore result in more time reading as well as increased learning outcomes.
My students must developed their English proficiency levels in order to be college ready. Reading will help increase their English proficiency levels so they can have more options in life.
