"If I had a chance to take a foreign language I would have jumped at it." These are words spoken by one of my brightest, most committed students this year. In fact, this same student has been attempting to teach herself German on-line. According to that program she is 22% fluent. What she has really wanted is a teacher to help her with the difficult stuff; a German class. When I've asked others in my study hall class, and my geography classes if they would enjoy learning a language the response is always a resounding - yes! Students want and need the opportunity.
My Project
Language is vital to development and with the acquisition of a second language one's cognitive growth is exponential. What better way to learn one's own language more completely, than by learning a second. Few languages if any have been taught recently in my district in the lower grades where language is most easily acquired, and I am trying to bring them back. Next year students will have the opportunity to take German for a 12-week period in the 7th and 8th grade at my school and we need resources to make it work. I have access to extra copies, some resources I have collected over the years, but i would like a textbook students can access and use at school and at home. Students are so excited about this new opportunity. Please consider donating to help make this happen. Thank you.
