A former student reminded me how knowing songs can provide comfort. When her home life became very difficult, she said that she couldn't sleep. I asked her, "Do you just lie awake all night?" She said, "I sing to myself." "What songs do you sing?" I asked. She said, "The ones you taught us. I thought about what she said. Learning math facts and parts of speech prepares them for standardized tests, but singing prepares them for life. Hello, and welcome to my proposal for The Melody Book, a textbook compilation of over 300 songs, about which the Amazon reviewer raved. Though expensive, it will never become obsolete, catch viruses, or require tech support. This book will help increase the song repertoire of my own 1st and 2nd grade students and my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade choir students of whom 45% qualify for the subsidized meal program; in a school with no general music, art, or P.E. teachers; in a district that asked teachers to justify purchasing paper and pencils; in a state that is 43rd in education spending. Although there is much to cry about, we keep the blues away by singing together throughout the day. The songs in The Melody Book will help us learn vocabulary, rhyming words, and syllabication with rhythm patterns. Music also helps us learn math concepts like fractions, sequencing steps, and auditory and movement patterns. Singing will also improve our auditory memories, our abilities to visualize and imagine, and give us common cultural ground. Most importantly, it will give my students tunes to hum when they need comfort. As the volunteer choir director and manager, I would also like to request name tags, overhead projector pens, and transparencies to help us learn lyrics and each other's name.
