My Students

My 2nd grade students are enthusiastic readers who know the joy of sharing great books. Many of my students come from low income families, and include English Language Learners, and students who may have limited access to a wide variety of reading materials. It's important to me that my students feel that they're important and that reading is important. Adding additional books to our currently limited classroom library will help to promote a sense of belonging in my classroom. In addition to being enthusiastic readers, my students also love to create. Integrating visual and language arts helps engage all students, promote learning and creativity. By also providing art materials, students will have all the tools they need to learn and create.

My Project

Additional books will allow my students to more effectively utilize our wonderful classroom library and empower them with choice and variety throughout the week. By having more series books to share, students will be able to read along with their peers and create a sense of community.

Students who feel empowered to choose their own books, and have access to a wide range of reading material, will develop a love of reading and habit which will help them to become lifelong readers.

In helping to foster a love of reading, I've also selected art supplies that can be shared, emphasizing and encouraging classroom community. We'll use these supplies as a springboard for integrating language and visual arts that aren't dependent on a grade, but that highlights important concepts that will help them become better readers without the pressure of being evaluated.
