I have amazing 7th and 8th grade students who love to explore and are curious about so many things. They love Science since it relates to things they observe around them and it even connects to themselves.
Learning by seeing, motivates my students but learning by doing makes them understand it.
With this in mind, I've always been doing demonstrations in class to present my lessons and followed it up with lab experiments and projects so they get to experience and learn from it.
A lot of my students are very vocal oabout saying that they love Science. But even if they don't say it, it gives me fulfillment as a teacher whenever I see them doing hands-on activities and their eyes widen and their lips smile every time they observe something amazing. At the end of the day, remembering their "thank yous" is enough to pay off my tiredness and refreshes me to look forward to another engaging lesson the next day.
My Project
I like doing hands-on activities in my classroom. But working in a Title I school sometimes with a limited budget to purchase materials sometimes becomes a hindrance for us to explore even more.
Aside from showing just pictures in class, I want my students to be amazed and learn by seeing things with their own eyes.
I am going to use the prepared slides to look at different organisms in learning the use of the microscope. I am tired of using letter "e" as my example which is not as exciting as looking at actual organisms from prepared slides.
Mitosis is also an important unit that I cover in teaching cell and evolution. It will be exciting for my students to look at actual slides of cells dividing rather than just showing them pictures from a Google image.
Lastly, I tried to do a lot of dissection in my class as well. We dissected chicken feet, cow eye and cow heart but the dissection tools we have were old and not sharp enough to cut which slows down our experiments.
I want my students to keep their excitement of learning high and I believe that bringing new materials will make them learn better in my class. Thank you very much!
