Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember in school that special class project or experiment? That special learning experience that you will never forget, that made you truly love learning? I want to bring that experience to my students. I teach 26 amazing third grade students in an urban public school. In my classroom, the majority of my students receive free/reduced lunch. My culturally diverse classroom includes many English Language Learners, 6 of whom attend bilingual classes daily, as well as 3 students who receive special education services.

Regardless of culture or language, all children love learning about living things. Science is a small time during the busy third grade school day that gives my students the opportunity to do so. Our science books, however, can only give a small view of living things. Pictures and a teacher’s words can only say so much about the study of a living thing. I want my students to really understand the topics presented to them and, the only way I will be able to do this, is by making sure my science lessons are hands on. In order to do this, I need a lot more science resources. However, my students are not empty vessels to be filled with knowledge. I do not want a banking style of education where the teacher does all the talking and the students do all the receiving! I want to make learning meaningful and engage my students in the process. The only obstacle that I have now is finding the resources to do it.

What is more fascinating than seeing something new change, grow, and live? I would like my students to learn about life cycle by studying the frog. I want all my students to be involved in the learning in my classroom. Students will observe tadpoles and watch how they change. They will be responsible for the feeding and caring of them as they learn about life cycles through various activities.

I want my students to gain appreciation of the science of living things and life cycles. However, with a limited amount of resources, I cannot make learning as meaningful as it should be. You will make it possible for my students to engage in science. This is an experience that they will truly enjoy and remember for a lifetime. What a great gift you will be giving my students!
