Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"LeapFrog's LeapPad Plus Writing" learning toy is designed to enhance children's basic skills in math, reading and writing. Essentially a lightweight child-sized laptop, the device allows children to navigate through interactive books featuring stories and lessons in writing, math, phonics, science, geography and music. Using a wide easy-to-grip pen, children point to pictures to hear music or sound effects or point to words to hear them spoken. In addition, students can use the pen to practice forming letters and number symbols.
The "LeapPad Plus Writing" device will be integrated into my first grade classroom as part of an electronic learning center, which will focus on building students' basic skills in all subject areas. This center will include six LeapPads and a wide assortment of cartridges and books ranging from the pre-k to second grade levels. Since many of my students enter this grade with severe academic delays (averaging at least 1-2 grade levels behind), it is essential that they reinforce literacy and math skills to ensure they meet and exceed citywide and state standards by the end of the year.
In addition to reviewing basic skills in the primary subject areas, the LeapPads will supplement the academic intervention services (AIS) that my students receive in our school's computer lab. Unfortunately, in a Title I school in the South Bronx, my students' opportunities to learn with computers are fairly limited. In fact, we only have one functional computer in our classroom. Considering many of my kids don't have computers at home, a technology center would essentially provide them with one of their first learning experiences with mini-laptops, and demonstrate the importance of using such resources throughout their education.
