My Students
At the end of class each day, my students and I chant, "Today a reader; tomorrow a leader!" It is this mindset that has motivated my students to improve their reading and leadership abilities in our Baltimore school. Though some students start the year below grade level in reading, may be learning English as their second language, or face hardships outside of the classroom, each individual demonstrates some type of growth that will help them in the future.
Our school expects 100% of our scholars to go to college and my students know that readership and leadership will help them obtain that goal.
My Project
It is not uncommon for my preteen students to hear that they should sit down, keep quiet, and avoid making a fuss, and yet in just a few years they will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills such as confident decision-making, intrinsic motivation, and collaboration. These students need to be coached in and trusted with independence starting now. They need to make choices each day and evaluate the effects of these choices. These choices start in our classroom environment.
If I ever get the opportunity to visit with my students while they are at college or fulfilling their career dreams, I doubt that I will see them sitting stiffly in thirty identical plastic chairs.
More likely, they will be collaborating with peers at a big, welcoming table. They will be creating comfortable spaces with soft seating and soothing lights so that they can focus on their projects. They will creating spaces that best meet their needs.
In my class this year, students will be coached on how to make choices about their environment starting with seating options. As a result, students will reflect on how they learn best, be welcomed into a comfortable and personalized classroom, and establish work habits that will serve them years down the line.
