My Sixth Graders attend middle school in a poverty-stricken neighborhood in Maryland. They encounter abandoned houses, potholes, and vandalism as they walk to school, but, once inside, they are eager to learn the skills they will need to improve their community. Though many students come to our class over two years behind in reading, all of them have big dreams and goals that motivate them to work relentlessly. My students realize that sitting alone at a desk and working silently can only take them so far in reaching their goals. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our interactions with each other and share our achievements with our community, but we often do not have the technology needed to do these things.
