Many of my students have never left the state of New Mexico. My school is located in a remote area of the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. We are far from the nearest town or store.
I teach 11th and 12th grade U.S. History and Government. Many of my forty-nine students live without electricity or running water. Students live in houses dispersed around the reservation, traveling up to an hour on the bus to reach the school. All my students are Navajo and all receive free school lunch and breakfast. For many, these are the only meals that they receive each day.
My students are eager to learn about history and the world outside the reservation. Many have dreams of attending college. Unfortunately, most students do not have access to computers or newspapers at home. Neither does the school library have adequate computers. Therefore, it is vitally important for my social studies class to expose students to world news and life outside the reservation.
The majority of resources to teach students about the world are only available on-line. These include news sources to show current events, educational videos on particular topics in history, and primary source documents. My classroom is not equipped with an LCD projector and I have no way of utilizing these resources to benefit my students.
I need an LCD projector to help teach students about the world outside the reservation. This projector will allow me to project images from my computer directly onto a classroom wall. This will enable me to show students national and world news that will increase knowledge of current events. I will be able to show educational videos and primary source documents that will greatly enhance students' understanding of the historical time period. Furthermore, the projector and document camera will significantly reduce classroom waste by decreasing the number of copies that I must make each day.
Additionally, a projector will help my students attend college. It will enable me to visually demonstrate the application process and show students the wide variety of colleges and universities available. Without this technology, students' access to information about college is very limited. Increasing students' knowledge and understanding of the world will also increase their competitiveness as applicants.
Your help in buying the projector will have a huge impact on my students. It will help to expand their horizons and increase their ability to attend college. You will impact the education of every group of students that enters my classroom for years into the future.
