My Students

My students are from a low-income, rural community in Northern Maine. Our small school is where students not only learn coursework, but also important skills for the real world. The students spend a portion of their day in my social studies classroom taking courses in world history, US history, civics, personal finance, and college and career planning. My students love to be active learners who think, collaborate, analyze, and make connections from the past to current events. I love that they are investing in their futures and challenge themselves in the classroom. However, over half of my students receive free or reduced lunch and have insecurities about coming to school because of the inability to afford basic hygiene necessities.

My Project

As a teacher, I see that many students are not provided with basic necessities from home. Items, like laundry detergent, can be a lot for students to afford as over half of our students come from low-income households. Worrying about things like personal hygiene can impact their academic success. By providing basic essentials like laundry detergent, I hope to ease these difficulties so students can focus more on their learning and school.

The laundry detergent is important to our school because it will help students who may not have all that they need.

This project will help us provide basic essentials to my students so that they can be confident at school.
