About 115 students spend a portion of their day in my classroom. Each one, in a multitude of ways, inspires me to be the best mentor I can be.
My students like to learn and to laugh, to think and to create, and to reflect upon themselves as individuals who, in even the smallest way, can change the world.
My students are naturally curious and refreshingly social. They manage to maintain a sense of humor even as they begin to assume greater responsibilities as students, as members of their families, and as citizens of our school and community. They are active learners who enjoy thinking, collaborating, analyzing, and connecting to the world around them. They are encouraging and supportive of each other and of me. They have helped to create a sense of community in the classroom - a learning family - and have become invested in not only their own learning but the learning of others.
They are going places, and I am so very proud of them.
My Project
This is a student-written project by our student council. Through this project, student council members will employ leadership skills, develop empathy and compassion, and practice social responsibility. Ours is a high poverty, rural Maine school where half of the students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. This community outreach project was developed to meet the essential needs of our PK-12 students so they can focus not on life's hardships but on their academic success.
As student council members, it is our responsibility to not only lead and represent the student body but to help everyone feel safe and welcome in our school.
By providing for the needs of others, we hope to be good role models who demonstrate empathy and compassion towards others. This project is just one way we can be leaders and help to make a difference.
We are trying to provide basic necessities for members in our school community that need them. We know that many students have difficulties outside of school which may impact their academic success. By providing basic essentials like laundry detergent, we hope to ease these difficulties so students can focus more on just being a kid.
This project is important to our school community because it will help students who may not have all that they need. This project will help us provide basic essentials to our student body. It is important to take care of each other so that we all have an equal opportunity to academic success.
