Dr. Hing from Norfolk VA is requesting lab equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to explore space exploration by launching their own straw rockets and studying how they fly. My students need Pitsco Straw Rockets - Getting Started Package (For 30 Students).

Our students reside in an urban environment. We provide a safe environment for our students to eat, learn, and grow. Our classrooms are kept clean, however as with many older historic buildings, repairs are always necessary. We try our best to provide basic necessities such as paper, pencils, notebooks, and even tissues.
Our student body consists of 65% African American, Asian, or Latino students.
Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Our special education teachers are placed in classrooms to provide assistance to the students in need. We also serve a large percentage of military families due to our proximity to the Norfolk Naval Base.
Our students range in abilities. We offer over 20 advanced placement courses and offer a medical program facilitated at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. We also offer tutoring after school and provide remediation daily.
This year I have decided to spend some time on space exploration. We have studied the Space Race and its impact on the Cold War. We have studied the people that made it possible to have a man walk on the moon. I would like to continue further by having students study the flight of the rockets and see how high they can go or how far they can go. By being able to make their own straw rocket and launch it across the room, they will have fun while learning the physics of flight. Competition leads to design. Prototypes flown can lead to redesign. Not only will the students learn about rockets and rocket flight, they will also learn the importance of the engineering design process.
