My students need high interest books on their own reading levels to motivate them in their reading lives. I need to move them from beyond learning to read, to loving it!
My students come from varied backgrounds and face many challenges. Many of them are just learning to read in English. They need their learning materials and environment to be fun and inspiring.
My students are English/Spanish Dual Language Learners, which means that our goal is that they will be biliterate by the time they leave us in the 5th grade.
They learn to read in their native language and transition to the 2nd language around 2nd grade. Our school is an International School and we strive to prepare our students to be 21st century global learners and citizens.
My Project
My students need to develop a love of reading. We need high interest books as I launch Reader's Workshop and strive to teach my students to think as they read in order to achieve greater understanding and depth in their reading. The students are building their reading stamina, comprehension, communication skills, writing, and analysis. They need books on their own reading levels that they can take home each night to read.
This project is so important because my students deserve everything.
Their lives are difficult and they do not have books at home to read or anyone who will read with them. Our challenges are great, but our determination to be successful is greater.
